IMPACT Magazine, Canada’s largest independent fitness, health and sports publication, celebrating 29 years of publishing, has an upcoming career opportunity for an Art Director & Designer based in Calgary, AB.

This is a full-time, senior design position where the ideal candidate will be able to produce unique and exceptional design work in magazine layout, online and on social media to fully elevate an established and trusted brand.

Art Director & Designer

Responsibilities Include:

  • Branding: Understanding, managing and furthering the brand image of IMPACT as a leader in the health and fitness, and magazine industry; Maintaining a consistent look / style and a high standard for quality.
  • Industry: Staying on top of health and fitness community news as well as design, marketing and new media  trends.
  • Editorial: Collaborating closely with Publisher & Editor on content and visual ideas with strategic positioning and target audience in mind.
  • Marketing Materials: Creation of media kit, sales sheets and other promotional materials issue-to-issue.
  • Freelancer Management: Assigning and directing freelancer artists (photographers, illustrators, designers, etc.) to visually represent editorial concepts at an acceptable quality.
  • Layout: Multi-page magazine layout, converting editorial and visuals to completed designs; placing and managing final advertising files.
  • Flat Plans: Coordinating page order, editorial content and advertising materials with Editor, Publisher and Sales Team.
  • Advertisements: Quality control of incoming files; art direction, problem-solving and design of advertising materials for clients including brand ads, sponsored content and features for print, web and social as necessary.
  • Press: Creation and uploading of press ready layout files, proofing, making edits and giving final approval to the printer with the Publisher & Editor.
  • Digital Editions: Converting the print magazine to a digital format via Issuu; adding internal hotlinks, URLs and extra features where appropriate.
  • E-Newsletters: Creation of MailChimp email campaigns and automation; placing advertising and managing subscriber lists.
  • impactmagazine.ca: Maintenance of overall WordPress site; managing layout and content updates; formatting and posting of magazine content and sponsored content material and ads via Google Ads. Creating new ideas and solutions for future growth online.
  • Statistics: Monitoring traffic for impactmagazine.ca and social platforms; providing competitor comparisons via research.
  • Social Media: Social media content creation, ad management and scheduling on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; Promotional video management on the IMPACT Magazine YouTube channel. Creating new ideas and solutions for future growth on social media platforms.
  • Contests & Promotions: Setup and management of contest graphics and forms for use on social media platforms and/or website, magazine, newsletters, etc.
  • RACE SOURCE GUIDE: Managing event submissions and master list for use in print and online (annual).
  • Dropbox/Office Server: Organizing assets for sales team use and maintaining an organized editorial and images archive.

Requirements & Assets:

  • Art Degree or equivalent in years of experience
  • 5+ years of industry experience as a Graphics Designer/Art Director in publication design, and new media including website design, digital advertising, motion graphics, social media, and visual brand development.
  • Professional knowledge of design principles, typography, colour, layout and production best practices for print and online.
  • A portfolio of highly creative, relevant work that demonstrates graphic design skills applicable to magazine design and online promotions.
  • Expert use of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, primarily InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Proficient on MacOS with common productivity tools such as the Microsoft Office Suite, Dropbox, Google Docs, etc.
  • Knowledge of the WordPress CMS platform and HTML (CSS and scripting knowledge is a plus).
  • Knowledge of e-reader/flip book platforms such as Issuu a plus.
  • Hands on experience with MailChimp or other mass mailer system for campaign building/scheduling, list management and marketing automation efforts.
  • Social media content creation and ad management expertise.
  • A thorough understanding of photography and lighting techniques.
  • Proven experience giving creative direction to freelance artists and communicating with clients.
  • Ability to coach clients who lack design knowledge or capability.
  • Ability to stay organized and multitask while under pressure within tight timelines; occasionally working longer hours every two months to meet deadlines.
  • An eye for detail and understanding of designing for strategic goals and specific demographics.
  • A team player with the ability to take the initiative with solo work.
  • Is interested in building future growth by identifying new ideas for all platforms.

  • A strong work ethic, professional, diplomatic, excellent communication skills, and passionate about design
