When you’re running, the last thing on your mind is getting swimmer’s ear. But you don’t have to jump into the pool to get this infection. It can happen by wearing ear buds.
People sweat more running in the summer heat and wearing earbuds can trap moisture and humidity inside the ear, leading to infection. If you listen to music while training this summer, here’s what you should know:
- Swimmer’s ear happens when bacteria grows inside the ear canal.
- To help water evaporate faster from inside the ear, don’t use a cotton swab. Hold a hairdryer up to the ear on a low setting or insert drops of rubbing alcohol into the ear canal.
- Avoid activities that would cause moisture build up in the ear for a few days until the infection is fully healed.
