When he was 25, Steve Curtis was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The British Columbian had already made millions of dollars as the founder of the ZAG Group, which operates a diverse range of businesses and he used his assets to travel the globe in search of a cure for his rare form of lymphoma. Relying on nutrition and mindfulness practices, he has remained cancer-free for more than a decade. The nutritional regimen that he incorporated into his life are the hallmarks of the menu at Zend Conscious Lounge, a new restaurant in trendy Yaletown.
The Zend menu features raw and organic foods, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free choices. Best of all, 100 per cent of the profits from the restaurant will go to a charity determined by company employees. General manager Brook Cairns says, “I’ve been in the hospitality industry for years and I’ve never seen a restaurant like this. It is a community of people who truly believe in the power of nutrition to improve well being and the quality of life.”
You must order: The Zend shot ($5), a two-ounce hit of herbal goodness that promises to relax the body and focus the mind. It includes an exotic concoction of rhodiola, holy basil, kava kava, ashwaganda and Yerba mate.
Menu price range: $6-$18 for food items; drinks, which are all non-alcoholic, range from $3.50 for tea to $9 for smoothies.
